Growth cycle is 3-4 months, numerous leaves are produced in late spring, flowers late summer to early fall; reproduces by seed, tillers, and some rhizomes. Big bluestem is generally not found in the northern portion of the Texas Panhandle. Sand bluestem is adapted to the sandy soils of Northwest Texas.
