Sprangletop (Leptochloa Dubia)
Green
Sprangletop is a native, warm season perennial, bunchgrass
that is primarily used for grazing and erosion control.
It is highly palatable and nutritious to all classes of
livestock.
Green Sprangletop is extremely drought tolerant. It
grows two to three and a half feet tall. It is cold and
drought tolerant. This is a short lived grass, but
because if its fast germination, quick growth and easy establishment,
it maintains itself well.
Green Spangletop is most often used in range and reclamation
blends as a nurse crop for other species providing for other
slower growing grasses. Green Sprangletop grows well
on rocky sites as well as rocky soils. It is adapted
throughout Texas, Southern New Mexico, and Southeast Arizona
and Florida.
It is a popular grass among wildlife enthusiasts because
of the size of the seed for food and density of forage for
habitat. Seed in March or April 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep
in a well prepared seed bed at 2 pure live seed pounds per
acre on rangeland. The seeds are rough and can be placed using a regular type seed drill. |
