Remarks :

This grass is a large, robust perennial bunchgrass with wide, flat leaf blades. The seedhead is purple, pyramidal in shape and drooping, often has an oily substance on the branches. Growth starts in early spring. Adapted to shady wooded areas of bottomlands and upland sites. This grass does not become palatable to grazing animals until after frost. The seed is eaten by birds.
