Other common names, "Berlandier wolfberry",
"Desert thorn", and "Tomatillo". Wolfberry is
summer deciduous shrub; that is, it sheds its
leaves from April through September, but
remains evergreen through the winter. The
slender branches are spreading or reclining and
somewhat crooked. The blue or pale lavender,
cup-shaped flowers are borne singly or in pairs in
the spring, summer and fall. This is followed by a
red, rounded or oval berry. Wolfberry provides
browse for deer and sometimes livestock. Many
small mammals and birds eat the fruit. Adapted
to alkali and clay flats, gravelly limestone
scrublands and thickets. Also found in sandy
soils of woods and waste places.
