Also known as “Blue false indigo”, 1– 4 feet tall, flowers from May to June. Adapted to rocky sites of prairies, hillsides, open woods, and roadsides. Prefers limestone or clay soils. The sap of this plant turns purple when exposed to the air; used for dye by Native American Indians.
